  • Participate in special events like Arbor Day and Canada Day

Do you enjoy gardening? Would you like to work with a group of like minded folks who want to beautify the community? Do you have the time to plant and/or help maintain a flower bed in your neighborhood? Do you like coordinating the efforts of groups of volunteers?

What are my choices?

There are many options for volunteers to help Strathcona in Bloom. Some (like being part of the Board) last year round; others, like planting and maintaining a bed, last just a few months (May through September.) In the late winter, we are often seeking new volunteers for the upcoming summer season. As we learn which of our volunteers from last year are returning, we identify the gaps we need to fill.

What would I be doing?

Front Yard Recognition

The Front Yard Recognition Coordinator is a member of our Board. It is a year round position with the greatest time requirement from April through August.

There are ten Area Captains that assist the Coordinator and they are needed from June through July.

Outdoor Spaces Recognition

The Outdoor Spaces Recognition Coordinator is a member of our Board. It is a year round position with the greatest time requirement from May through August.

Outdoor Spaces volunteers assist the Coordinator in identifying and delivering notices to local business and non-profits. This requires about 8 hours/month from June through August.

Community Flower Beds

The Volunteer Coordinator for the Community Flower Beds is a member of our Board. It is a year round position with the greatest time requirement from March through September. The Coordinator provides leadership for the approximately 20 teams of 3-4 planters each.

The Community Flower Bed planters work in teams of 3-4 people with about 20 teams in total. These individuals select, purchase and plant their designated bed, weed it weekly throughout the summer and then pull the plants at the end of the season. Purchase costs are paid by SIB.

Board Members

As a member of the Board, you attend and participate in monthly board meetings (except in the summer and December) which takes 3-5 hours/month for a Director at Large. You may choose a specific position (like Chair, Treasurer, Communications Coordinator etc.) each of which have addition and unique time requirements. Board members frequently volunteer in on or more of the ongoing programs as well depending on their interests.
